Senior guard Rachel Stuehm rebounded a missed shot and hit a layup at the buzzer to lift Schaumburg past Downers Grove North 43-42, putting the Saxons into the fifth-place game of the Falcon Classic at Wheaton North.
It was Stuehm’s second game-winning bucket this season. She also hit a field goal from the free throw line in the final seconds to lift the Saxons past Rockford Boylan 51-49 in the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tourney.
“Rachel was right in the place where she needed to be (for the game-winning putback Wednesday),” said Saxons coach Ashley Berggren. “Overall, it was not one of our better rebounding games. Defensively, we did a good job helping out.”
Stuehm finished with a team-high 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Sophomore point guard Amanda Kelly, who also has a game-winning bucket this season against St. Charles East, added 12 points and three 3-pointers for the Saxons.
Alyssa Saklak chipped in 6 points for Schaumburg (7-5).
Glenbard South 42, Elk Grove 33: Patrice Hicks scored a game-high 17 points and center Nevena Markovic had 10 as the Raiders (12-2) earned a victory over the Grens in Wheaton North tournament play.
Maggie Fries made a pair of 3-pointers and led Elk Grove (8-8) with 11 points. Michelle Calmeyn scored 8 and Kelly Naughton 6; Diamond Boyd led the Grens with 11 rebounds and 7 steals, and Calmeyn had 7 rebounds.
Elk Grove, 1-2 in the tournament, concludes action with a 1:30 p.m. game today against Downers Grove North.
Proviso East 61, Barrington 34: Seniors Abby Kirchoff (7 points) and Shelby Whigham (6 points) led the Fillies (8-5), who coach Babbi Barreiro said just couldn’t find their rhythm on their home floor.
The Pirates improved to 2-0 in the Suburban Holiday Classic after defeating Stevenson on Tuesday.
“Obviously, Proviso East is a good team,” Barreiro said. “But we didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half. That got us out of rhythm.”
Sam Maasarani, Nicole Collins and Kirchoff each had a 3-pointer for Barrington.
Proviso East was led by Illinois-bound Ivory Crawford’s 16 points.
“We just didn’t look like we were ready to play,” Barreiro added. “Even though they are a good team I felt we could have played better.”
The Patriots will be on the Proviso East floor today and face Stevenson at noon.
Grayslake Central 52, Palatine 42: Sophomores Nia Pappas (15 points) and McKenzie Wiedemann (12) were top scorers for the Pirates (5-9), who will face Carmel in the second-place game of the Warren Blue devil Classic today at 6 p.m.
Lake Forest 45, Wheeling 32: The Wildcats (3-12) were led by juniors Leah Malsom (12 points) and Kellie Kuzmanic (10) and will face Deerfield for third pace in the Warren tourney today at 4:30 p.m.
