Rematch against Grayslake North goes to McHenry
Grayslake North's boys basketball team had a rematch with McHenry on Monday afternoon, the second time the teams had met in less than a week.
The Knights claimed a 57-52 victory last Wednesday on their home court in a Fox Valley Conference crossover.
On Monday, the game had a similar look heading into the final quarter, thought this time on a neutral court.
And this time around Grayslake North couldn't pull out a victory, falling 63-52 in the Grant Holiday Tournament in Fox Lake.
The Knights (6-3, 0-2) trailed for most of the game and finally managed to take a slim lead midway through the fourth quarter.
"There for awhile when we took the lead," said Grayslake North Todd Grunloh, "it had the feeling like the same way we played them the last time. We kept grinding and grinding and coming back."
Teddy Ludwick scored 7 of his game-high 23 points in the final quarter, and Patrick Delamar hit a short jumper which put the Knights up 50-49 with 4:35 left.
"Our kids grabbed a lead for a few seconds," Grunloh said. "(McHenry) scored the next possession and took over.
"We weren't able to stop them consistently the entire game. A 1-point lead the way we were stopping them, you didn't think that would be enough to win. We didn't have too many times with multiple stops."
The Warriors (8-2, 2-0) pulled away with a 14-2 spurt to earn the victory.
"Not often you play a team twice within a few days," McHenry coach Tim Paddock said. "There's a lot of familiarity between both teams.
"We wanted to take a second shot at taking advantage of them. We did a better job of responding than the last time. Last time when we lost the lead, I thought we panicked. This time we did a better job."
Brian Madson led the Warriors with 20 points and 14 rebounds, Pat Maher added 14 and Kyle Melton chipped in 14.
David Sparks also had 11 points and 17 rebounds for the Knights.
