Lomas, Conant win at Glenbard East
Conant's early season success continued Tuesday night in Lombard.
The Cougars girls basketball team ran its record to 7-1 with a 44-32 victory over Glenbard East as senior guard Kelly Lomas led the offense with 18 points, including a 3-pointer.
Classmate Alyssa Rawleigh added 7 points and a 3-pointer for Conant, which will visit Hoffman Estates on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
The Cougars rallied from a 12-5 first-quarter deficit by outscoring the Rams 15-2 in the second quarter.
"We didn't come out like we have been in the past but the girls regrouped and started playing our basketball," said Cougars coach Dan Travers. "We finally got into our game and spreading the margin in second half.
"We need to keep improving and getting better at certain things."
Fremd 52, Sandburg 40: Junior guard Jessi Wiedemann scored a career-high 24 points with five 3-pointers as the Vikings (7-1) won their Sweet Sixteen opener.
Sophomore Ashley McConnell added 14 points and senior Megan Gary 10 for the Vikings, who host Schaumburg Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
Maine West 58, Deerfield 53: Visiting Maine West evened its record to 1-1 in the Central Suburban North as freshman Brittany Collins scored a game-high 17 points with 12 rebounds.
The Warriors (1-8 overall) rallied from a 9-0 deficit and trailed only 15-14 after one quarter thanks to a 30-foot 3-pointer by senior Stephanie O'Neill at the buzzer.
"We played much better in the second half, we didn't fall apart like we have been," said Warriors coach Derril Kipp. "Amanda Hoye (point guard) played a solid floor game in the second half."
Hoye finished with 9 points, 3 steals and 3 assists while Megan John hit for a career-high 10 points. Carly Martin connected for some big buckets as West rallied in the third quarter.
Kayla Kennelly contributed 9 points and 6 rebounds for the winners.
Bartlett 48, Palatine 44: The host Pirates (3-5) were led by sophomore Nia Pappas' 14 points while Laura Schweikert added 9.
Pappas had a pair of 3-pointers and Schweikert had 1.
Wheaton North 66, Hoffman Estates 45: Wheaton North struck for seven 3-pointers in the win over visiting Hoffman Estates (7-1).
Precious Ogunleye (12 points), Tanya Skworch (9) and Jadas Stotts (8) were top scorers for the Hawks.
Christian Liberty 38, Westlake Christian 22: Juniors Jayna Rowland and Carly Baric each scored 6 points to lead the visiting Chargers (4-2).
Downers Grove South 53, Leyden 29: Tashemia McKinney's 8 points were tops for visiting Leyden in the West Suburban Gold game.
