Meadows ends long East drought

Hoffman Estates 45, Palatine 44: Destinee Young (14 points, 10 rebounds), Jada Stotts (13 points, 4 assists) and Precious Ogunleye (12 points, 11 rebounds) led Hoffman Estates (7-0, 1-0) in the Mid-Suburban West opener.

Junior guard Tanya Skworch added 3 assists for the Hawks.

Katie Scovic (14 points) and McKenzie Wiedemann (12) paced Palatine (3-4, 0-1).

Sophomore Nia Pappas hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds which brought Palatine to within a point.

The Pirates led 34-23 at half but Hoffman held the hosts to 5 points in each of the final quarters.

Palatine hit six 3-pointers in the first half four by Wiedemann and one apiece from Pappas and Scovic.

Wheeling 34, Elk Grove 25: Wheeling rookie coach Julissa Hernandez got the first victory of her career as juniors Kellie Kuzmanic (9 points) and Leah Malsom (8) led the Wildcats (1-7, 1-0) in the MSL East opener.

Senior guard Maggie Fries scored 10 points to lead Elk Grove (4-3, 0-1).

Hersey 59, Crane 57: Hersey improved to 4-2 as senior forward Stefanie Mueller scored a career-high 21 points with 12 rebounds and 4 steals at the Maine West Tip-Off Classic.

Megan Rogowski added 13 points for the Huskies while junior Corinne Busby had 9. Eileen Zydek collected 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

Addison Trail 54, Leyden 42: Senior Moira Quinlan hit 5 3-pointers for a team-high 15 points for Leyden in the West Suburban Gold matchup.
