Boiler blows in Bartlett school
U-46 officials said Sycamore Trails Elementary School will be open Tuesday for parent/teacher conferences, despite a small explosion in one of the schools boilers late Monday.
Bartlett firefighters responded to a report of smoke at the Bartlett elementary school and discovered a cover blown off the boiler, filling the school with light smoke and natural gas, according to the Bartlett Fire Department.
The incident occurred at the Sycamore Trails Elementary School just after 8 p.m. Monday.
The first crew on the scene found that smoke was mostly on the first floor, according to the department.
Nicor workers and building maintenance staff were called to the scene after firefighters found the boiler had overpressurized, causing $120,000 in total damage, according to the fire department.
U-46 spokesman Tony Sanders said no one was injured in the incident, and the district is still investigating to determine the cause of the blast.
He said the school is closed for the week due to the Thanksgiving holiday and teacher institute days.
The school has three boilers, and the remaining two boilers are operational and providing heat to the facility.
“This should not affect parent-teacher conferences here today, or affect students when they return next week,” he said.
