CL South outlasts Jacobs
After 4 overtimes, the Class 3A Jacobs boys soccer regional championship match Friday came down to penalty kicks.
And Crystal Lake South's magical season continues, as the Gators prevailed 7-6 in PKs to come away with a 2-1 win over the Golden Eagles and their second straight regional title.
CL South (21-1-2) will take on either Cary-Grove or Round Lake at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Barrington sectional semifinals. The Trojans and Panthers meet at 2 p.m. today for the Grant regional title.
Jacobs' Ian Treacy opened Friday's scoring with a goal in the 34th minute of the first half. But CL South came back when Charlie Oliver scored on an assist from Trevor Bittenbender on a 25-yarder from the upper 90 with just 2:40 remaining in regulation.
In the PK round, Alex Tapia, Oliver, Adam Gatza, Bittenbender, Brian Karp, Sam Murdock and Mike Hernandez each made their shots for the Gators while South goalie Dave Walsh stopped two of Jacobs' attempts to give CLS the win.
Taylor Pignataro, Anthony Capobiacno, Matt Ehrhardt, Nate Bernicchi, Mario Rako, Neil Comfort scored PK goals for Jacobs.
“It was one of the most exciting games anyone can be a part of,” said CL South coach Brian Allen. “I am proud of my boys. They remained mentally tough. Anytime you can win in 4 overtimes is definitely a momentum boost to move forward. It's a confidence boost.”
Walsh finished the match with 4 saves. AJ Pfatchbacher had 14 saves in goal for Jacobs (18-6).
“It was a battle and we went through 4 OTs and a shootout,” said Jacobs coach AJ Capello.
