Marian Central 27, St. Edward 7

St. Edward coach Mike Rolando tried every defensive scheme imaginable to stop Marian Central standout running back Corey Cavitt.

Nothing worked.

Cavitt ripped through the Green Wave defense for 190 yards on 33 carries while scoring 4 touchdowns as the Hurricanes defeated St Edward 27-7 in a Suburban Christian crossover matchup at Marian Central's George Harding Field in Woodstock Friday night.

“(Cavitt) is a tough, consistent hard running back, said Rolando. “We tried putting an extra lineman in the game in the second half and we still couldn't stop him. They had about a 60-pound advantage on us in the line and they wore us down.

On offense, the Green Wave (6-2) amassed 353 yards and 20 first downs, but managed only 1 touchdown. That score came on the first drive of the game when Maurece Jackson scored from 4 yards out to tie the score at 7-7 with 1:01 remaining in the first quarter. St Edward was hindered by 8 penalties for 80 yards.

“They get the early touchdown and we answer back with a score on our first drive, said Rolando. “We moved the ball all night long, but we weren't consistent. We would make a big play, then have a penalty or make a mistake.

After allowing a touchdown late in the first quarter, the Marian Central defense blanked St Edward in the final 3 quarters while scoring 20 unanswered points.

The Hurricanes forced 2 fumbles and intercepted Green Wave quarterback Ben Lehman once, a pickoff by defensive back Colton Wenstrom.

The Hurricanes seized control of the game in the second quarter with 14 straight points. Cavitt scored on a 1-yard run and scored from 2 yards out with 26.5 seconds left to give the Canes a 21-7 lead at intermission.

Cavitt scored an insurance touchdown from 2 yards out with 7:48 left.

“The offensive line was outstanding, said Cavitt. “I got through the line and there were big holes to run through.

Marian Central coach Ed Brucker's game plan was to run the ball.

“We had the size advantage in the line and our plan was to run and give the ball to Corey, said Brucker. “Corey ran hard and we opened some big holes.

Jackson led the Green Wave in rushing with 90 yards in 20 carries and a score. Lehman completed 17-of-26 passes for 180 yards with 1 interception.
