Jacobs Special Olympians to play at Bulls game

The Jacobs Special Olympics basketball team has been invited to play before a Chicago Bulls game at the United Center in November.

The team, which made history a few years ago by going to the state tournament and winning silver in their division, will play an exhibition game at the United Center on Saturday, Nov. 13 before the Bulls take in the Washington Wizards. Tickets are $75; $10 from each ticket sold will benefit the Jacobs Special Olympics team.

For information or to purchase tickets, contact Jim Blaseck, team coach, at Jacobs High School, (847) 532-6158; james.blaseck@d300.org.

Flu shots: The McHenry County Department of Health will host a flu shot clinic from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19 at the Huntley Area Public Library for adults and children aged 9 years or older. The library is located at 11000 Ruth Road.

No appointments are needed. The cost of a flu shot is $30. Medicare and Medicaid Part B are accepted.

This year's flu vaccine will include the H1N1 strain that circulated in 2009. For more information, call the McHenry County Department of Health at (815) 334-4510, or call www.mcdh.info.

FRG cross country: Good luck to the Fox River Grove Middle School cross country teams that are headed to Bloomington-Normal this weekend for the state championships.

The boys team won sectionals last week, placing four runners in the top 10, while the girls team finished second.

This is the first time the girls team has qualified for the state championships.

It is an amazing accomplishment considering the students weren't sure they would be able to field a team a couple of years ago.

The Eagles won the state championships in 2006, but in 2007 the team dissolved because they couldn't find a coach. If no one volunteers, the school doesn't participate in that sport.

The Eagles cross country team was out of action until 2009, when a former cross country runner at Cary Grove High School, Jimmy Bartlett, and Cheryl Geary stepped up to help. All of the coaches at the school are volunteers.

“These two amazing people have given so much to our kids and we are so grateful for their time and effort, parent Jacci Richards said. “We have a wonderful group of kids on our team and they have worked extremely hard to become Sectional champs.
