Summer weather at Cantigny's Fall Festival

Richard Spillner said he expected to be wearing a sweater and a jacket at the Cantigny Fall Festival on Saturday.

Instead, the Naperville resident wore shorts and a short-sleeved shirt. And still he felt a little too warm.

“It feels more like summer out here than anything else, he said. “But I'll take it. It's really nice out here and the kids are having a ball.

The annual Fall Festival took over the lawn at Cantigny Park for the entire day on Saturday. Visitors were treated to a host of activities, including a petting zoo, face-painting and live music.

Organizers had said they expected roughly 4,000 people to attend the festival throughout the day. Attendance seemed strong Saturday afternoon, as parking lots were nearly full and some of the more popular activities had long lines.

Among them was the candy dive, in which children got to rummage around in an area filled with straw to find candy surprises buried within.

Donna Tomczak laughed and took pictures as her 4-year-old daughter, Stephanie, threw straw on her brother's head while digging around.

“We waited a bit, but I knew this would be a favorite, Tomczak said.

Saturday's surprisingly warm and sunny weather was a bonus, as far as Tomczak was concerned.

“We have plenty of cold weather to look forward to, so I'm loving this!
