Cash toward a cure
It was a “rich night for Libertyville's girls volleyball team, which has had a lot this season.
The Wildcats improved to 22-0 with a 25-19, 25-15 win over visiting Mundelein in a North Suburban Lake Division match played in front of a huge crowd on “Volley for the Cure night at Libertyville on Wednesday.
“Nearly $2,200 was collected at the door, Libertyville coach Greg Loika said. “In addition to the funds already committed through shirt sales and player fundraising, the volleyball team will be collecting an estimated $10,000 to be donated to ‘Susan G. Komen for the Cure.'
The volleyball team is partnering with the football and cheer programs this season to raise money during breast cancer awareness month.
On the court, Libertyville got 5 kills on 5-of-5 hitting from right side Taylor Zant.
“Taylor Zant was huge for us, her best outing of the season, Loika said. “Mundelein had no answer for her. We started out a bit slowly with the distraction of our big event, but I was pleased with how we responded in the middle of set No. 1 to close it out.
Paige Hopper continued her strong play with 13 kills, while Catie Steffen added nine for the Wildcats. Kerry Rilsey contributed 2 kills and 3 blocks in the middle, and setter Cindy Setter Zhou notched 30 assists on 60 attempts and added 3 blocks of her own.
Libero Kristen Webb was “crisp with 14 digs, Loika said. Steffen also had 14 digs.
Mundelein (9-11, 2-4) got 5 kills from Brittany Busscher and four from Mackenzie Boich. Emily Tylka served 3 aces and Karen Chin set 46 of 46 with 12 assists for the Mustangs.
Lake Zurich d. Warren: Amanda Orchard's 11 kills and 2 blocks led the Bears to a 25-17, 25-18 win in North Suburban Lake action.Alexis Hartman lofted 20 assists on 37-of-37 setting, served 3 aces and posted 3 blocks for Lake Zurich (17-4, 4-1). Natalie Gora added 8 kills and 4 aces.For Warren (8-13, 0-5), Libby Perrone had 3 kills and 2 aces. Paige Jespersen and Jaime Dickinson also recorded 2 kills apiece, and Kaleen Iweema provided good defense for the Blue Devils.Antioch d. Lake Forest Academy: Jessica Ploss had 6 kills, 4 blocks and 3 aces on 13-of-13 serving for the Sequoits, who rallied to win the nonconference match 22-25, 25-16, 25-20.Lauren Tiffany and Brianna Grant added 5 and 4 kills, respectively, for Antioch (11-10). Savana Bailey dished out 12 assists, and Amber Dalgaard notched 14 digs. Grant also had 10 digs, 5 aces and 3 blocks.Lakes d. North Chicago: The Eagles picked up a North Suburban Prairie win, 25-7, 25-21.Marina Borrero had 4 kills for Lakes, while Rachel Sieracke and Kailey Molloy each had three. Molloy also dished out 10 assists, and Alex Silvola had 7 digs.
