Jacobs' Cahill, CL South reign at FVC meet
It was a two-peat for Jacobs senior Scott Cahill and a long time coming for the Crystal Lake South boys golf team Thursday at the Fox Valley Conference tournament in Harvard.
In fact, the last time CL South won the FVC tournament, their present coach was a senior on the team.
The Gators shot a 320 at Oak Grove to nip second-place McHenry by 2 shots for the team championship, while Cahill fired a 2-over par 73 to nab his second straight FVC crown on the same course the tournament was played at last year.
CL South carded a 78 from Rob Lemke, 79s from Nick Robles and Mike Digrazia and an 81 from Scott Stalo to win its first FVC tournament since 1997.
"We did just fine today," said fifth-year South coach Curt Wadlington, a 1998 South graduate who played for the Gators the last time they won the championship. "I think we were a little nervous but we were able to manage the golf course pretty well. It was a tough day out there but I couldn't ask for a better group of guys to go out there and have fun and compete."
Wadlington is just the third golf coach in CLS history and was happy he can add a coaching championship to the one he won as a player.
"It's really pretty neat," he said.
Cahill was also happy to win a second straight individual championship, but not all that happy with his game.
"I didn't play particularly well," said the Miami of Ohio recruit who shot 71 at last year's FVC tournament. "But my misses came at the right time and I was able to post a good score. It was real windy and the course was real firm."
Jacobs finished third as a team with a 330, carding an 82 from all-conference player Devin Sloma, an 87 from sophomore Sean Kozak and a 91 from Joey Swanson.
"I'm happy for Scott and overall we were about where we expected to be," said Jacobs coach Jeremy Bauer. "Crystal Lake South had a stranglehold on it going in undefeated. We knew we'd have to play well to hold our position in the conference and we did.
"The course was real challenging today. It was windy and the course was set up tough."
Grayslake Central's Eric Hogenkamp was second individually with a 76.
