Scouting Conant at Hersey
Conant (2-1) at Hersey (2-1)
When: 6:30 p.m. today at Roland Goins Stadium
Last week: Conant lost to Buffalo Grove 21-18; Hersey lost to Barrington 35-14
Outlook: A chance to rebound from a first loss and also get a win that could go a long way toward a possible playoff berth. Conant moved the ball as well as it has all year last week with 376 yards behind QB Matt Cullen, WR London Dokubo and RB Kevin Otubu but was minus-3 in turnovers and missed 2 PATs. "And we still had a chance to win at the end," said Conant coach Bill Modelski. "I was a little disappointed in our ability to score once we got in close and defensively half of their yards were on three breakdowns." Four turnovers and a special-teams breakdown on the opening kickoff hurt Hersey as it fell into a 21-0 halftime hole but clawed within a score behind the third-quarter running of Chris Polinski. "They have some talent," Hersey coach Dragan Teonic said of Conant. "They're definitely setting themselves up with great special teams and (Cullen) is playing well. It will be a challenge again for our defense." Conant will be without OL Kenny Kalish and DL Trace Ancona (concussions) and Modelski said RB Cordell Clark is questionable with a knee contusion. Conant has won three straight in a series it leads 10-5.
