Viator holds off Dunbar
St. Viator senior quarterback Cameron Korab's value was on display in Friday night's 28-20 nonconference football victory over Dunbar at Lane Stadium in Chicago.
Korab led the Lions to a 28-point halftime lead by completing 11-of-19 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown, while adding 45 yards on the ground.
"He's our leader," said wide receiver/defensive back Frank Laterza. "Every practice, every game he's always leading."
But with 1:34 remaining in the third quarter and St. Viator (2-0) on top 28-8, Korab went down with an apparent ankle injury. Laterza, who intercepted 2 passes and had a 35-yard touchdown catch, was forced into the quarterback role.
"It was nerve-racking," said Laterza.
With Korab on the sidelines, the Lions offense struggled to get in-sync and went three-and-out on its next three possessions, not allowing a tired defense to rest.
The Dunbar offense began to flourish bu scoring touchdowns on two of its next three possessions, closing the margin to 28-20 with less than two minutes to play.
But the Lions offensive line and senior running back Jimmy Menges (2 touchdowns grinded out two first downs to ice the victory.
"It's a win," said St. Viator head coach Chris Kirkpatrick. "But we learned a lesson early. Give Dunbar a lot of credit. They played hard."
Korab, who was on crutches after the game, was in good spirits but knows his team narrowly escaped with a victory.
"The offense was in synch. We just need to do it the whole game," he said. "We need to finish the game when it needs to be finished."
