Scouting Wheeling at Conant
Wheeling (1-0) at Conant (1-0)
When: 7:30 p.m. today at Charles O. Feutz Field
Last week: Wheeling d. Maine West 19-13; Conant d. Lake Park 27-13
Outlook: Both teams have a chance to match their win totals of a year ago. Wheeling used the effective running combination of Eddie Scanlon (120 yards, 1 TD) and QB Tyler Brady (109 yards, 2 TDs) last week. Conant junior QB Matt Cullen had a nice varsity debut by throwing for 187 yards and 3 TDs - two to London Dokubo, who also had a kick-return TD. "It was nice to jump on (Lake Park) but we did some things in the course of the game that made it interesting," said Conant coach Bill Modelski of a chance to take a 35-0 lead. "It was kind of good in the long run because this team needs to understand how to fight to win." Wheeling also rallied after giving up a TD on the opening kickoff as DE Chris Ramirez had 2 tackles for loss, 11/2 sacks and a fumble recovery. "Defensively we really stepped up," said Wheeling coach Dave Dunbar. "We had some question-marks going in but we got some answered between our safety and corner play." Dunbar said Scanlon was fine Saturday after bruising his back last week. Conant leads the series 13-9 and last started 2-0 in 2004 but Wheeling has won the last two meetings and looks to duplicate its 2-0 start of last year.
