Bags tournament Saturday: The Palatine Township Republican Organization will hold a bags/cornhole tournament Saturday, Aug. 14 at 3455 Salt Creek Lane, Arlington Heights. Registration is 9-9:45 a.m. To register early, call (847) 496-7871 or e-mail to bebe@palatinerepublicans.org. There is a limit of 36 teams per division. Cost to enter is $25 for a doubles team and $15 for a singles team. The top three teams win cash and prizes. The Social Doubles competition starts at 10 a.m.; the singles starts at 12:30 p.m. Beer, food and games all day. The PTRO is headquartered at 839 N. Quentin Road, Palatine.Barrington Hills PD accredited:The Barrington Hills Police Department received its third accreditation award from the internationally recognized Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) last week. Accreditation must be reapplied for every three years and stands as proof of a department's compliance with the highest standards of law enforcement practices and procedures. The Barrington Hills Police Department is the only accredited police agency in the Barrington Area Council of Governments and was the first in the McHenry County Council of Governments to receive accreditation.Law enforcement academy for seniors:Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart and state Rep. Fred Crespo invite senior citizens interested in law enforcement and crime awareness issues to enroll in the Senior Citizen Law Enforcement Academy to be held at the Schaumburg Township Activity Center, 1 Illinois Blvd., in Hoffman Estates, beginning Tuesday, August 17. The program aims to open the lines of communication between senior citizens and law enforcement officials. Participants will gain a better understanding of their responsibilities and duties, and receive advice on personal safety and crime prevention. Dart's top staff members will conduct the six-session academy and will provide information on an array of topics, including crimes against seniors, gang and drug awareness, understanding the role of the sheriff in the criminal justice system, overview of alternative sentencing programs, and functions of the Cook County Jail. The class meets from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays through Sept. 21. The program is free to all senior citizens living in Cook County.
