Soapbox: Actions speak louder than words

Actions speak louder than words:

Go ahead, Cook County commissioners, and express your outrage over Arizona's immigration law with your vote to boycott businesses from the state. If you feel better about yourselves, that's your prerogative. But why, then, did you minutes later approve a red-light camera contract with a Scottsdale firm? "This is not getting us off to the right kind of start on this," Commissioner Earlean Collins said. We couldn't have said it better.

And speaking of red-light cameras:

Naperville may join others and do away with right-on-red tickets. We enthusiastically support this proposal.

A shoe-leather referendum:

Volunteers in Sleepy Hollow will go door-to-door seeking donations to fill a $200,000 village budget gap - about $182 for each of 1,100 households. We're not in favor of government-by-begging, but we sympathize with towns facing sudden calamity while the state lags in passing along tax receipts.

Eyes on the Sky:

While a crowd of more than 6,000 for the Chicago Sky home opener at Allstate Arena was a great start, the following Thursday's attendance of less than 3,000 fans for the second home game was disappointing. Yes, it was a weekday, but one of the WNBA's best teams was in the house and the Sky came away with its first victory. We don't have that many opportunities to cheer on women's professional sports teams - and this is close to home. Let's get out there and show our support.

Making history:

While we're cheering for women, we salute Roselle resident Laura Martindale, who is among the first 20 women chosen to serve on a submarine crew following a Navy policy change. The 22-year-old Naval Academy graduate says she's "just proud to serve." Well, we're proud of your history-making accomplishment. Congratulations.

Getting it right:

Good to see that the right-hand turn on Martingale Road heading east on Higgins Road near Woodfield is now "no turn on red." The right part of it, though, aside from the safety issue with vehicles whizzing by in a rush to get on southbound Route 53, is that the "no turn" is only from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. No real reason for it the rest of the time. More intersections should be examined this way.

They're all winners:

Jan Vitullo may have lost the largest percentage of body weight to claim victory in the Daily Herald's Fittest Loser Challenge, but all participants can be proud of their efforts. Each is living proof you don't have to go to "Biggest Loser" extremes to change your life.

Summer touch-up:

We like Wauconda's creative approach to painting fire hydrants: Get you to do it. It's a great way to contribute, and the village will even pay $10.

End-of-year frolicking:

Grayslake Middle School students got a treat this week for meeting reading goals: an assembly where they could watch teachers get their hair buzzed or colored red. We applaud the teachers and administrators who submit themselves to such antics (being taped to a wall, moving the desk to the roof) in the name of student progress.

School's out:

And that means a lot more kids out and about at all hours of the day. Please drive carefully.
