Davey drives in winner in seventh for Glenbard South

Hannah Davey had a game-winning hit in her first softball game at Glenbard South.

Her second game-winner was extra special.

The Raiders sophomore, who went to Glenbard West her freshman year, singled in Maddy Glab with one out and a full count in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Hilltoppers 1-0 on Friday in Glen Ellyn.

"I wanted to beat them really bad," Davey said. "Coming back from an 0-2 count is really hard. You have to go after everything that you think could be a strike. When the count got to 3-2, you just have to swing that bat."

Glenbard South (25-3), held to 3 hits through six innings against Glenbard West starter Taylor Steinhilber, got its winning rally started as Tess DiIorio dropped a one-out single into short right field.

Pinch runner Glab stole second on an 0-2 pitch, sliding under the tag for her third steal of the day. The count ran full and .379-hitting Davey inside-outed a single down the right field line to score Glab.

"She's been fantastic for us," Glenbard South coach Julie Fonda said. "She's batting in the No. 8 hole, but she comes up with hits in some very clutch situations."

Raiders pitcher Jess Wilkes (18-2) held Glenbard West hitless after taking Bri Wyatt's wicked one-hopper off the knee for a one-out infield single in the third. Back-to-back Wilkes strikeouts in the first inning stranded Wyatt at third, and she left a runner at third base in the sixth as well.

Wilkes struck out five with a knee bruise on the eve of prom the worst damage.

"Now I have a bruise on my leg in two places," Wilkes said. "It didn't really hurt; it was just kind of a shock. I just kept pitching. What I was really mad about was my prom dress."

Glenbard West (12-14) got its second strong start from Steinhilber in a week, following her 3-hitter against Naperville Central the past Saturday.

"We had our chances early in the game; we just didn't push that run across," Glenbard West coach Mary McGrane said. "It's a great team to face before we finish off conference next week. It shows our girls that we can play with the best. It's a big confidence boost.

"I thought Taylor threw real well. She hit her spots."
