Huntley reporters win big at state finals

Those intrepid reporters at Huntley High School are at it again.

The high school newspaper, The Voice, has racked up awards for its insightful and fearless student journalism.

I got to see the crack reporting staff at work two years ago, when we were side by side, covering the brief teachers' strike.

The student journalists were able to use their relationships with teachers to get them to tell their side of the story - a feat few "professional" papers could manage.

The Huntley High School publications staff was recognized yet again earlier this month at the Illinois High School Association state finals.

Dennis Brown, the journalism adviser, tells me the high school team placed third out of 42 teams, Huntley's second third-place finish in the past five years.

The strong finish came on top of Huntley's sectional championship in April, the third in five years, Brown said.

In addition, six students won individual recognition at the state finals:

• Michelle Lisack, Yearbook Design, second place

• Dani Moritz, Editorial Writing, third place

• Amanda Svoboda, Copy Editing, third place

• Rodrigo DeLosada, Newspaper Design, fourth place

• Meagan Flynn, Feature Writing, fifth place

• Jordan Geigle, Feature Photography, sixth place

Congratulations to all the students on the high school publications staff. Keep up the good work, and drop me a line if you have any insight on the future of journalism.
