Educators receive distinguished service award
Luis and Judy Cabrera have been chosen as the recipients of the 68th Elgin Cosmopolitan Club Distinguished Service Award, based on outstanding contributions to the community. A dinner will be held in their honor on Tuesday, May 25 at the Elgin Country Club, off Weld Road.
The couple are dedicated educators: Luis, a retired principal and Judy, a retired bilingual diagnostician.
The Cabreras have been active participants in the community as members serving on various boards and committees. They have devoted many hours serving the community.
Judy has been on the Club Guadalupano Scholarship Committee for the past 32 years. Her passion since 1993 to the present, Judy has been a Youth United Way Sponsor and is on the United Way board of directors. Judy has also been an Elgin Leadership Academy Session Planner since 1990. In the past, she has been nominated for Outstanding Young Woman of Elgin and YWCA Leadership Awards. She received the Club Guadalupano Les Lemke Award for service to the Hispanic community.
Luis is currently chairman of the Club Guadalupano Scholarship Committee and Secretary of the Latino Treatment Center board of directors. Luis also serves as treasurer of Centro de Información. Luis is a board member of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame and Hamilton Wings, and participates in the Community Crisis Auction Committee. Among his awards are Club Guadalupano Joaquin Comacho Community Service Award, Dr. Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award, Elgin Community College Distinguished Alumnus Award and Fabulous 50 Award, and Kane County Educator of the Year Award 2005.
The Elgin Cosmopolitan Club is a nonprofit organization serving the Elgin area for over 75 years and is dedicated to community well-being through charitable donations and volunteer service with an emphasis on preventing diabetes.
