Most towns would be lucky to have one championship team, Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson said Tuesday.
"We're very excited because we have two teams that are state champions," Johnson said recognizing Conant and Elk Grove high schools varsity cheerleaders.
The village board Tuesday night honored both teams with signs that will grace their schools' entrances.
Elk Grove High School's coed cheerleaders have won five consecutive Illinois High School Association state championships, making it the only high school to win the coed division since the IHSA made cheerleading a sport and began mounting the state series in 2005.
Meanwhile, the Conant Cougars, hailing from Hoffman Estates but with a large percentage of students from Elk Grove, took home first place in the IHSA cheerleading finals, large school division, earlier this year.
Johnson proclaimed April 27 as James B. Conant High School Varsity Cheerleading Day in the village, and the week of April 28 through May 2 for Elk Grove High School's coed cheerleading team.
