Landwehr, Prospect deliver vs. Grant
Prospect coach Ross Giusti wanted to see what sophomore Jack Landwehr could do in a varsity game Saturday at Grant.
Consider Landwehr's varsity debut a rousing success. He allowed 1 run and 2 hits in five innings of relief, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and got the victory when Prospect (5-3) rallied for a 15-13 victory in Fox Lake.
The right-handed Landwehr came in with Prospect trailing 12-8 after 21/2 innings. He had 8 strikeouts and 1 walk.
"(Sophomore coach) Trevor Stocking said he's been dominating at the sophomore level," Giusti said. "He locates his fastball and has a couple of different speeds on his curve. He came in and threw strikes and was very impressive."
But he was in position to take a tough loss after Grant scored a tiebreaking unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. But John Coen (4-for-5) led off the seventh with a double and Peter Bonahoom hit his second homer of the game.
Bonahoom drove in 4 runs and has 4 homers this season.
Miles Osei also went 2-for-3 with a double, homer and 2 RBI for the Knights.
Schaumburg 10, St. Charles E. 9: Joe Dombek's solo homer in the seventh inning broke a 9-9 tie for Schaumburg (3-3). Dombek went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Mark Bielanski also homered.
Matt Brancato went 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, Matt Glombicki was 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Kevin Hilliard, Joe Infusino and Eric Englund had 2 hits apiece for the Saxons.
St. Viator 10, Elk Grove 2: Julian Sipiora had a big day with the bat and Robert Romano took care of business on the mound for St. Viator (4-3).
Sipiora was 3-for-4 with a homer, double and 4 RBI and Romano (1-0) allowed 4 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings. David Alameda and Kevin Gannon had 2 hits for the Lions and Rick Perotti had 2 RBI.
Donny Duschinsky homered for Elk Grove (2-7).
Conant 4, Glenbrook North 2: The host Cougars (5-1) pushed across single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to claim a nonconference victory and make a winner out of pitcher Anthony Lauria. The Cougars had 11 hits, all singles, and Otto Linderman was credited with an RBI.
Palatine 15, Antioch 2: Cody Bobbit hit his third homer of the season and host Palatine had 11 hits to secure victory in 5 innings against the Sequoits in nonconference play.
Mike Luschen, Dan Haze and Byron Skinner doubled, Kurt Becker and Kevin Klein tripled and starter Alex Miramontes (1-2) earned his first victory of the year after pitching the first 4 innings (4 strikeous, 1 walk).
Joe Campe went 2-for-3, Skinner and Haze both had 2 hits and Becker finished 2-for-3 with 4 RBI for Palatine (6-6).
Barrington sweeps: The host Broncos won Game 1 against Whitney Young 11-5 and prevailed 16-5 in 5 innings in Game 2 to complete a nonconference doubleheader sweep.
Robby McDonnell (3-1) earned the victory in Game 1, striking out 13 in just 42/3 innings but walking five and hitting a batter. Chris Rogers pitched 21/3 innings of effective relief and earned the save. Barrington (7-4) produced 12 hits; the biggest contributors were Jack Scheffler (double, 6 RBI), Paul Rathman (2-for-4, 2 runs) and John O'Connell (3-for-5, 2 RBI).
