United Way of Elgin's Income Impact Council is offering free income tax preparation to families who made $50,000 or less in 2009 or individuals who made $25,000 or less. IRS-certified volunteers will be available to help from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin. The program runs through April 15. No appointments are necessary; it's first come, first served. Road project begins:The resurfacing of Brier Hill Road in Huntley is scheduled to begin April 19 and wrap up about two months from then, according to the village. The work will extend from Copperwynd Road north to the McHenry County boarder. For more details, visit huntley.il.us.Algonquin Lions Club helps Haiti:The Algonquin Lions Club recently donated $1,000 to support Lions Clubs International's relief efforts in Haiti, officials said. "Lions are committed to bringing aid to those impacted by the earthquake in Haiti," Algonquin Lions President Tim Toomey said in a statement. "Through support from people in our community, the Algonquin Lions and the LCIF will be able to help so many more."
