St. Viator roars on Florida trip
St. Viator's softball team improved to 2-0 with a 14-1 victory over Madison Plains High School (Ohio) on Monday in Florida.
Winning pitcher Julie Sweeney (1-0) struck out two in the first 3 innings. Melanie Slawny pitched the last 2 innnings.
The Lions were led on offense by Sweeney (2 RBI, double), Abby Dickey (2 RBI), Bridget Urbanus (double, 2 RBI) and Ronnie Mack (2 hits).
Wheeling 3, Dundee-Crown 1: Scout Scanlon, Sara Kern, Sejal Shah and Alyson Fallon each had 2 hits for the Wildcats (1-2) in the nonconference victory in Carpentersville.
Saturday's results
Leyden improved to 3-0 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Lane Tech.
In Game 1, the Eagles won 14-3 in five innings behind sophomore pitcher Morgan Maize (1-0), who fired a 1-hitter, striking out nine and giving up 1 earned run.
The offense was led by Ciara Mackey's grand slam in the first inning. Amanda Moran was 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored, while teammate April Markowski was 2-for-3 with a double and 3 runs.
Sophomore Hannah Seymore recorded a 5-0 shutout in Game 2. Seymour had a no-hitter going into the seventh before giving up a hit. She had 6 strikeouts.
A 2-run single by Christina Morgan in the fourth inning broke open the game. Amanda Moran (2-4) and Dana Sullivan (2-for-3, double, 2 runs) led the offense.
