Wheeling's Hart tosses 1-hitter at Round Lake
Wheeling junior right-hander Matt Hart kept pumping fastballs past visiting Round Lake hitters in Friday's nonconference baseball game.
Hart ended up throwing a 1-hitter with 12 strikeouts and no walks as Wheeling (1-4) beat Round Lake 8-0 in a game called because of darkness after 51/2 innings.
"He was bringing the ball today," said Wheeling assistant coach Pete Ogilvie. "They just couldn't get around on his pitches and he relied mainly on his fastball."
The only Round Lake hit off Hart was a ground ball single in the hole past third base where shortstop David Scanlon made the play but had no chance to get the runner. Hart did hit two Round Lake batters.
Wheeling did all of its offensive damage in the third inning. Kalvin Thong had a 2-run double and Josh Matthys had an RBI triple and a bunt single in the inning.
Schaumburg 7, Maine South 5: Schaumburg junior Kurt Kempema made his first varsity start after a late start with the basketball team's run to the sectional title game.
The left-hander made a smooth transition as he threw five scoreless innings as the Saxons (1-1) held on for the nonconference win in Park Ridge.
"He really did a nice job," said Schaumburg coach Paul Groot after Kempema allowed 5 hits and 1 walk and had 4 strikeouts in a 71-pitch outing. "He had a good, live fastball and it was running away from the right-handers. He did nice job of getting ahead of hitters."
Sophomore Matt Brancato was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI, Roger Lane had an RBI single and Joe Dombek had a sacrifice fly as the Saxons led 7-1 going into the seventh. Shawn O'Neill came in to get the final three outs for the save after Maine South's Ronnie Muck hit a grand slam.
Barrington 7, Bloomington 2: Tyler Tureck displayed the pitching depth Barrington (3-1) has in a complete-game 6-hitter at Bloomington. Tureck had 6 strikeouts and 1 walk and allowed 1 earned run.
"He really spotted the ball well and had good command," said Barrington coach Jim Hawrysko. "He basically went after them and didn't throw a lot of pitches."
Ricky Alfonso and Paul Rathmann drove in 2 runs and Jack Kurcab scored 2 runs.
"The bottom of the order did a good job of getting on base and turning it over to the top of the order," Hawrysko said.
Barrington plays Normal Community and Chatham Glenwood at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. today in Bloomington.
St. Charles East 13, Palatine 6: Palatine was rolling with a 6-0 lead through three innings but visiting St. Charles East started its comeback with a 2-run fourth and went ahead to stay with a 6-run fifth.
Jim Smearman had 3 hits and 2 RBI for Palatine (3-2).
Prospect 8, Highland Park 8 (7 inn.): Peter Bonahoom went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Thomas Kelly was 2-for-3 with an RBI for host Prospect in the game called after seven innings because of darkness.
Prospect took an 8-7 lead with a 5-run sixth inning.
