St. Viator bats hot in Florida

St. Viator was able to play in actual baseball weather Thursday in Florida.

The 80-degree temperatures were even more enjoyable for the Lions as they won their first game 10-7 over Benjamin (Fla.) in Fort Lauderdale.

Winning pitcher Jack Czeszewski and Robert Romano homered as half of the 12 hits by the Lions (1-1) went for extra bases. Czeszewski also doubled and Romano drove in 2 runs.

Cory Kay went 3-for-4 with an RBI, David Alameda had 2 hits and 3 RBI, Brendan King had 2 doubles and an RBI and Julian Sipiora had a triple and an RBI for St. Viator in the contest.

Czeszewski pitched into the fourth and Mac Mastrangeli came in to stop a 6-run outburst that got Benjamin within 8-7.

Tyler Ford came in with one out in the seventh to get the save.

Hoffman 6, York 2: Mike Kiviranta (1-1) threw a complete-game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and 1 walk for Hoffman Estates (1-2) in the nonconference win at York.

Single runs in each of the first three innings gave Kiviranta all the support he needed.

Erik Smoy broke open a 3-2 game with a two-out, 3-run double to the right-field fence in the fifth inning.

Warren 10, Grayslake North 1: The Blue Devils got 2-for-3 efforts from Scott Heelan, Patrick Kenney (4 RBI) and Mike Herrmann (RBI, 2 runs scored).

Zach Schneider and Tanner Erbach combined on a 1-hitter over 5 innings. Schneider (2-0) threw the first three frames, striking out six, walking one and allowing 1 hit.

Kevin Staszczak collected the lone hit for Grayslake North.
