LITH employer proud to support troops

Peter Sternberg of Lake in the Hills is proud to be a patriot.

He recently received a Patriot Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Sternberg is a senior product marketing manager at US Cellular and received the honor for staying in touch with Nick Harris, one of his Oklahoma-based employees while Harris was fighting in Iraq for a bit more than a year.

The award is given to people who give extraordinary support to employees in the US National Guard and Reserves.

Harris nominated Sternberg for the award for staying in touch with him and for keeping he and his family posted on the company's current projects.

"To me, I just found it incredibly humbling because I just have the utmost respect for nick serving this country and what he'd done on my team," Sternberg said. "We're like a family."

Autism Awareness Month: April is National Autism Awareness Month and as such, the Alexander Leigh Center for Autism in Lake in the Hills is holding a pair of fundraisers.

The first event is scheduled from 4 to 10 p.m. April 8 and involves a dinner at Colonial Cafe in Algonquin - a percentage of its sales goes toward supporting the autism center.

On April 18, the charity Guns n' Hoses hockey match will commence at the Leafs Ice Centre in West Dundee.

The match will be between the Enforcers Hockey Club (a team comprised of local police officers) and the Wauconda Firefighters Ax Men.

Tickets will be sold at the door and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children between 13 and 17 years old.

Kids 12 and under get in free.

If you want to hang out with the teammates after the game, they'll be meeting up at Thirsty Whale Bar and Grill in Algonquin.

All proceeds from both events that day go to the autism center.

The auction, which includes dinner and an open bar, will be held 6 p.m. April 10 at D'Andrea Banquets in Crystal Lake.

The event costs $75 per person.
