Helping parents raise teens and preteens

"Parenting Teenagers," a six-week class and discussion group for parents of teenagers and preteens will be offered from 7-9 p.m. Thursdays April 15 through May 20, by Spectrum Youth and Family Services, at the Schaumburg Township Hall, 1 Illinois Blvd., Hoffman Estates.

The group is open to parents who reside in Schaumburg Township and who have children ages 10-18. There is a charge of $25 per parent or couple. In two-parent households, both parents are encouraged to enroll, though individual and "single" parents are welcome.

"Parenting Teenagers" is the video version of STEP/TEEN (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting of Teens), an edition of the most widely used parent education program in the country. Spectrum's classes will also incorporate concepts from "Active Parenting," another popular parental skills course.

Through guided discussion among the participating parents in a relaxed atmosphere of mutual support, the sessions will cover topics such as reasons for misbehavior; ways to build children's self-esteem; how to improve family communication; and methods of discipline. The class is being led by Doreen Rohr, L.C.S.W., Spectrum's Associate Director for Clinical Services.

Preregistration is necessary as space is limited. For information, call (847) 884-6212.
