Four school gyms open during spring break
Here is what's in the news for the week of March 22-26, at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For details, visit u-46.org.
There will be no classes during spring break but open gyms will be held at four U-46 schools.
• On Monday, an open gym for U-46 students, age 7 to 18, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Tefft Middle School 1100 Shirley Ave. in Streamwood.
• On Tuesday, an open gym for U-46 students, age 7 to 14, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Bartlett Elementary School, 111 North Ave. in Bartlett.
• On Wednesday, an open gym for U-46 students, age 7 to 14, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Parkwood Elementary School, 2150 Laurel St. in Hanover Park.
• On Thursday, an open gym for U-46 students, age 5 to 14, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Lords Park Elementary School, 323 Waverly Drive in Elgin.
In other newsbull; On Wednesday through Sunday, the South Elgin High School "Storm Singers" will travel by bus to New York City to perform in the Heritage Music Festival on Saturday, March 27. They will also visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, Battery Park, Times Square, Wall Street, and also will take in the Broadway show "Chicago." They will end up at the Actors Temple for a Broadway Performing Arts Workshop to learn directly from the performers themselves. Students also will get to participate in a dinner and dance cruise after the awards ceremony Saturday night.bull; Now through April 16, a U-46 Elementary Art Exhibit will be displayed at First Community Bank, 50 Tyler Creek Plaza in Elgin. Gallery hours are: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. The following schools will have student artwork featured: Bartlett, Centennial, Channing, Glenbrook, Hanover Countryside, Hawk Hollow, Heritage, Horizon, Laurel Hill, Liberty, Nature Ridge, Oakhill, Ontarioville, Parkwood, Prairieview, Ridge Circle, Spring Trail, Sunnydale, Sycamore Trails, Wayne and Woodland Heights. bull; Centennial Elementary School welcomed Ginger Zee, NBC meteorologist, on March 12, to give a weather presentation to the second-graders. The students raised funds and presented her with a check for $200 for the Leukemia Foundation for which she is a spokeswoman.
