Public welcome at U-46 board meeting
Here is what's in the news for the week of Monday to Friday, Feb. 22-26, at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For details, visit u-46.org. Seniors 62 and older living in the district may attend U-46 plays and concerts for free if they pick up a platinum card. Call Kathy Frisbie at (847) 888-5000, ext. 5305 to order one.
Board meeting: On Monday, the U-46 Board of Education meets at 7 p.m. in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. Elgin High: Thursday through Saturday, the play "Damn Yankees" will be performed at 7 p.m. in the Elgin High School auditorium, 1200 Maroon Drive. There will also be a matinee performance Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Senior citizens may attend this matinee for $3. Tickets are $8 and $6 for students and senior citizens. Larkin High: On Tuesday, the Student Government will sponsor a school blood drive in coordination with the Heartland Blood Centers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Larkin High School auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin. On Thursday, Larkin students will enjoy a Turnabout Dance at 7 p.m. in the commons.
South Elgin High: On Thursday through Saturday, the play "Man of LaMancha" will be performed at 7 p.m. in the South Elgin High School auditorium, 760 E. Main St. There will also be a matinee performance Saturday at 2 p.m. $8 and $6 per student or senior citizen. For tickets call (847) 289-3760, ext. 3470.
Streamwood High: On Friday and Saturday, the play "Godspell" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Streamwood High School auditorium, 701 W. Schaumburg Road. $8. For advance tickets, call David Hain at (630) 213-5500, ext. 4905.
Ellis: On Wednesday, Ellis Middle School will hold ISAT Slam Dunk Night from 6 to 8 p.m. The principal will give a short presentation on the importance of the ISAT test, and how parents can help prepare their child to do the best he/she can on this test. After the presentation, the gym will be open to play basketball.
Laurel Hill: On Monday, adult ESL classes will be held at Laurel Hill Elementary School from 6 to 8 p.m. The class will also be held Wednesday evening. On Tuesday, the "Crossroads" after-school kid's club will be held in the gym from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. On Thursday, an ELL parenting class will be held from 9:45 to 11 a.m.
Liberty: On Monday, the kindergarten students will present a musical performance at 6:30 p.m. in the Liberty Elementary gym.
Lowrie: On Wednesday, a Parent University will be held from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. at Lowrie Elementary School. The parents will learn everyday math games their children engage in during the school year. Families are given the games and supplies to use at home.
Sunnydale: On Thursday, the Sunnydale Elementary PTO invites Sunnydale families to swim at the indoor Cool Pool at Park Place Family Recreation Center, 550 S. Park Blvd., Streamwood. $4 for children ages 3-17 and $5 for adults. Families should sign in at the counter so the school can earn a percentage of the admission price.
Sycamore Trails: On Wednesday, the second-graders will perform a musical program called "Stone Soup" for their families at 1:10 p.m. in the Sycamore Trails Elementary commons.
Timber Trails: On Thursday, Family Movie Night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Timber Trails Elementary gym. Admission to see the movie "Up" is free to Timber Trails families only. Concessions will be available. Kids can come in pjs, bring blankets.
Wayne: On Tuesday, a Scholastic Book Fair will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wayne Elementary School. Young Authors at the school will show off their published writing and children in first, second and fourth grades will sing. On Thursday, the mother/son miniature golf event will take place at the Putting Edge from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Pizza, pop and snacks will be available.
In other news: On Friday, there will be no classes held due to Institute Day. On Thursday, the U-46 Middle School Orchestra Festival will be held at the Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin at 7 p.m. Discovery 2010, the first Science Fair/Exposition is coming to Gail Borden Library on April 17. Pick up a registration form at the library or gailborden.info. Registration is due by Friday, Feb. 26. This is open to all U-46 students in kindergarten to 12th grades, including home-schooled children within U-46 boundaries.
