Student in custody after S. Elgin HS bomb threat

South Elgin High School was evacuated Wednesday evening after a note detailing a bomb threat was found on campus.

Police Sgt. Michael Doty said that students had reported to a bus driver that they found a note on a library drop box indicating a bomb was scheduled to go off at a certain time on Thursday.

Elgin Area School District U-46 officials handed the investigation over to police, who conducted a search of the building bomb-sniffing dogs at approximately 6:30 p.m. "The building was found to be completely secure," Doty said. A student, who is a juvenile, is now in custody.

U-46 spokesman Tony Sanders said school activities are scheduled to proceed as normal tomorrow. Principal Melanie Meidel, will be sending out e-mail to parents who have an e-mail address listed in our system. "Because of the late hour, and the fact that there is no credibility to the threat, we opted to not send (an) emergency phone call," Sanders said.
