The Elgin Academy girls basketball team will play for the program's first regional championship tonight.
Senior Alyssa Pena exploded for 18 points Wednesday night as the Hilltoppers (12-9) rolled to a 45-16 win over Chicagoland Jewish Academy in the semifinals of the Class 1A North Shore Country Day regional in Winnetka. Elgin Academy will face host NSCD at 7:30 p.m. tonight for the regional title and a berth in next week's Mooseheart sectional. North Shore beat Christian Liberty 47-33 in the other semifinal Wednesday.
"Alyssa Pena came out and played her heart out on offense and defense tonight," said Elgin Academy coach Vicente Pena. "It's the best game she's had all year and the best game the team has had all season."
Caitlin Ward added 8 points for the Hilltoppers, while Lauren Steimle and Brigitte Keslinke had 7 each.
Hinckley-Big Rock 73, Westminster Christian 40: Sarah Rodgers and Rachel Doby closed out their Westminster Christian careers with 16 and 11 points respectively in the Warriors' season-ending loss to the defending Class 1A state champs at the Indian Creek regional. Doby added 8 rebounds and 4 blocks for Westminster, which finished the season 11-16.
South Elgin 76, Marian Central 46: All 13 South Elgin players scored points in this nonconference rout on the road. Becca Smith and Alyssa Krause led the way for the Storm (10-14) with 11 points each, Sarah Havemann added 9, while Emily Young and Dijon Smith had 8 each.
