Concerts, dances coming up in U-46 schools
Here is what's in the news for the week of Feb. 8-12, at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. For details, visit u-46.org. Bartlett Highbull; On Wednesday, the Bartlett High orchestras will perform a concert at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, 701 Schick Road. Selections from Broadway shows include "Oklahoma," "Sound of Music," "Camelot," "My Fair Lady" and "South Pacific."Streamwood Highbull; On Wednesday, a blood drive will be from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Streamwood High School west gym, 701 W. Schaumburg Road.bull; On Saturday, the Winter Ball will be from 7 to 10 p.m. in the commons. Tickets are being sold in advance only, not at the door.Larsenbull; On Thursday, an Orchestra Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Larsen Middle School gym, 665 Dundee Ave., Elgin. Participating students will be beginner and intermediate students from the Larsen elementary feeder schools only. They include Coleman, Lincoln, McKinley, Sheridan and Timber Trails. Admission is $1 per child, $2 per adult and $6 per family.Tefftbull; On Thursday, an Orchestra Concert will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Tefft Middle School auditorium, 1100 Shirley Ave., Streamwood. Participating students will be beginner and intermediate students from the Tefft elementary feeder schools only. They include Heritage, Horizon, Laurel Hill, Ontarioville, Parkwood and Sunnydale.Fox Meadowbull; On Monday through Friday this week, a Scholastic Book Fair will be held during school hours at Fox Meadow Elementary School. bull; On Thursday, Family Book Fair Night will be from 5 to 7 p.m. in the school's Learning Center, 1275 Jenna Drive in South Elgin.Hilltopbull; On Friday, a Valentine's Dinner and Dance for Hilltop families will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hilltop Elementary School, 1855 Rohrssen Road, Elgin. The PTO will provide pasta, breadsticks, a drink and dessert. A DJ, complete with a light show, will spin tunes at the dance. Admission is $5 each, free for kids ages 3 and younger.Lowriebull; On Wednesday, the school will have a Parent University Read Aloud Night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lowrie Elementary School, 264 Oak St., Elgin. Parents will learn strategies to help their children when reading aloud to them at home.Sunnydalebull; On Wednesday, fifth-and sixth-grade students, along with the chorus, will celebrate Black History Month through song at Sunnydale Elementary School, 716 Sunnydale Blvd., Streamwood. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. before the PTO meeting.bull; On Thursday, fifth-graders who have completed the DARE program will graduate. Essays will be read, district and village officials will speak, and awards will be given out. All fifth-grade students' families are invited.In other newsbull; Students and staff at Washington Elementary School donated more than $500 to Children of Uganda to support an orphan for an entire year. This means providing food, shelter, clothing, transportation and schooling. They combined money collected from a holiday candy cane sale and holiday store to reach this goal. bull; Sheridan Elementary students have shown compassion and understanding toward the people of Haiti during their fundraising drive over the past few weeks. The students have become more aware of world issues and particularly the situation in Haiti. To date they have collected more tahn $1,700 to be donated to the Red Cross. Students gave snack money, allowances and even birthday money to help the less fortunate. bull; Eastview Middle School students collected $3,300 over a six-day period for the American Red Cross, which they called "Hearts for Haiti."
