Tax reform might save state
In DuPage County and across the state, families are reeling from the recession while city, county, and state budgets are squeezed. Citizens, especially children and families, are paying the price.
As the need grows for services by those struggling to make ends meet, the budgets of those who provide them are being slashed, even eliminated, severely curtailing help to those in need.
Sadly, next year's state budget will be worse, with a shortfall projected at $12.8 billion, fully half the state's budget. While many legislators suggest that cutting to "live within our means" is the simple answer, the reality is that without new revenues it is a real possibility that services we all depend on - from public safety to education - will be cut or irresponsibly scaled back.
There is a solution: comprehensive tax reform legislation to raise adequate revenues and make taxes fairer for low and moderate income families. The Leagues of Women Voters in DuPage County support HB 174 as transparent, sustainable, responsible and progressive legislation. We believe that HB 174 or equal legislation softens these devastating cuts while beginning to move our state back to fiscal health. Please urge your representatives to show leadership, joining those representatives who already support HB 174.
