Enroll in McHenry County conservation workshop Jan. 17

Step back in time and learn the skills of yesteryear during this one-day workshop event offered by McHenry County Conservation District on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Prairieview Education Center, 2112 Behan Road in Crystal Lake. Enrollment in these adult classes is limited and there is a fee for materials.

Make Your Own Lacrosse Stick: From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., build a traditional Great Lakes-style Native American Lacrosse Stick. All materials will be provided, however bring a draw knife and wooden hand screw clamp if you have one.

Beginning Quill Work: From 9 a.m. to noon, the group will focus on curvilinear quill work involving one needle. This is the most basic stitch done on woodland quillwork and can be used to create wonderful things. All materials are provided.

Make a Pattern for 18th-century Stays: If you are afraid to wear stays because you think they are uncomfortable, then this is the class for you. From 9 a.m. to noon, they will use the "duct tape method" so bring a close fitting T-shirt that you no longer want to wear - it will be ruined in the process. All other supplies and full written instructions will be provided.

Basketmaking: Learn historical basket weaving techniques with a modern twist from 1 to 4 p.m. Techniques will include over-under, start-stop, weaving and braiding. The basket will have a unique rim, a colored bow accent, and will hold a 22-ounce jar candle. Some candles will be for sale at the class. All materials are provided.

18th-century Eastern Woodland Leggings: Woodland leggings were a garment worn by militiamen, longhunters, and farmers. In this class, you will make a pattern that can be used on canvas or deerskin from 1 to 4 p.m. You will need to bring 1.5 yards of 60-inch wide 100 percent cotton duck canvas. All other supplies will be provided.

Drop Spindles: Learn the ancient art of drop spindling for turning fleece and fiber into yarn from 1 to 4 p.m. All materials will be provided.
