Hinsdale South reaches tourney final

Seeking its second tournament championship in six years at the Lemont Christmas Classic, Hinsdale South defeated Plainfield Central 53-44 to win the championship bracket's Large School title.

Trailing 31-28 after three quarters, Hinsdale South (8-2) rang up 25 fourth-quarter points. Plainfield Central (10-4) is playing in its second holiday tournament after losing last Saturday to Naperville North at Waubonsie Valley.

Hinsdale South, the 2007 Lemont champion, was led by Joe Petrak's 16 points. Lavonte Brown scored 12 and Karl Ploger added 10 for the Hornets.

Coach Vince Doran's squad will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday for the Lemont title against Tuesday's Small School champion, Joliet Catholic (6-6), a 73-63 winner over Chicago Christian.

Leyden 56, Downers Grove North 54: Also at Lemont, Leyden (5-6) won the Large School third-place game over the 5-6 Trojans. D.J. Cienawa and Ross Johnson scored 17 and 11 points, respectively, to lead Downers North, which faces Evergreen Park for seventh place.

York 62, South Elgin 50: Junior Will Sullivan tied his personal high of 33 points to lift the Dukes. Sam Cleary's 10 points helped York (8-4) advance to Wednesday's fifth-place game against 7-5 Downers Grove South, a 62-53 winner over Oswego.

Palatine 61, St. Francis 37: St. Francis (3-8) lost its third straight game in the program's first visit to the Tosh Classic. Joe Pfeiffer led the Spartans with 9 points.

Montini 69, Hillsboro 69: Montini (2-8) concluded its debut at the two-day St. Anthony Bulldog Christmas Tournament in Effingham with a victory to counter an earlier 61-40 loss to Tolono Unity. Against Hillsboro, Tyshawn Johnson nearly had a quadruple-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 steals. Rich Bodee scored 21 points with 5 rebounds. Montini ends pool play at 11 a.m. Wednesday against Robinson - which beat Hillsboro 104-55 - with finals in the afternoon.
