St. Viator nets big road win

St. Viator's girls basketball made the long trip to Kankakee on Saturday afternoon and returned just like it left - perfect in the East Suburban Suburban Catholic Conference.

The Lions improved to 3-0 with a 43-32 victory over Bishop McNamara (1-3 conference), getting a game-high 15 points from senior Ronnie Mack.

Bridget Urbanus (3 assists) and Meghan McGrath (5 rebounds) each collected 7 points, while Taylor Skala added 6 with 5 steals and 4 assists.

Meghan Malone, Urbanus and Mary Calov each hit 3-pointers for the Lions, who are 7-2 overall.

"The turning point was our defense," said Lions coach Paul Bjerkness. "The key was taking away their two post players, who are two of the best ones we'll see. I can't say enough about the kids' effort. Bishop McNamara is a real good team and we had a great team effort on defense."

Barrington 57, Sandburg 52: The Fillies (6-3) won their Sweet Sixteen opener in Orland Park as junior Sarah Mass led the way with 12 points, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 blocked shot.

"Sarah paced us offensively," said Fillies coach Babbi Barreiro. "She was very steady."

Emily Harris chipped in 11 points with 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots. Abby Kirchoff tossed in 10 points while Sam Maasarani had 7.

Brooke Chandor collected 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.

"Brooke had a great game all-around," Barreiro added. "She was very active underneath the boards.

"Kiersten Tinkoff and Lizzie Deuel really gave us solid minutes off the bench. I felt we bounced back well (from a loss to Fremd on Friday night)."

Maine South 47, Prospect 28: Prospect suffered its first loss in 10 games as Maine South held the Knights to 14 points through three quarters.

Prospect (9-1) went ahead 8-7 with 2:02 left in the first quarter on a driving layup by Lexi Glennon (team-high 10 points), but the Hawks (8-4) took control of the nonconference contest with a 15-4 run to close the half.

"Maine South is a good team," Glennon said. "They are quick, hard-working and they execute well."

"We missed too many shots and we were too impatient on offense," said Knights coach Martha Kelly. "Maine South made some great shots."

After clicking for 61 3-pointers last winter, senior Amanda Brait hit a season-high 4 Saturday and finished with a game-high 13 points for the Hawks.

South sophomore guard Michelle Maher tossed in 10 points with 8 rebounds.

"She (Maher) has been outstanding for us," said Hawks coach Mark Smith. "Offensively and defensively, she sets the tone for our intensity.

"The thing I was most happy was how we ran our game plan which was to run transition. Obviously, they have a lot of size so we thought maybe we could take advantage of that with transition."

The Knights, whose next highest scorers were Marissa Pettenuzzo and Sarah Hunt with 4 points each, host coach Tom Dineen's Stevenson Patriots on Wednesday and visit Elk Grove on Friday.

"We had a tough week of practice and I think we were physically exhausted," Glennon added. "We've got to come back mentally strong against Stevenson. We have to keep working hard and believing in ourselves."

New Trier 54, Buffalo Grove 48: KC Dunne (13 points), Bailey North (11), Heather Nisbet (11) and Andrea DiPrima (9) led the Bison (3-6) in the nonconference game in Winnetka.

North, a freshman forward, started in place of senior forward Stacy Lialios, who did not play while nursing an injury.
