Wegner gives Barrington a big boost

Barrington's boys basketball team gave its rookie coach Bryan Tucker a very nice introduction into the Mid-Suburban League on Friday night at Hoffman Estates.

Led by senior guard Bryan Wegner's 25 points, one shy of his career-high, the Broncos jumped ahead early and never looked back in a 53-45 triumph in the MSL West opener.

"We got a lot of help off the bench," said Wegner, who also helped with his 5 rebounds and 3 steals. "We've just got to keep playing defense and working hard in practice. Things are starting to come together."

Every time Hoffman would get close, Barrington would come together and find a way to expand the lead.

The Broncos (3-2, 1-0) enjoyed their biggest lead at 36-33 in the third quarter when Wegner hit a 12-footer.

"It was great job by Bryan," Tucker said "He's our senior with the most experience and this is what you need from a kid like him. He gave us that leadership and stepped up for us."

Junior Greg Gerrard added 11 points while Ben Bartz chipped in 10 with 6 rebounds. Riley O'Daniel also had 4 assists and 3 steals.

Hoffman (3-2) got to within 44-40 on a pair of free throws by Brandon Fischer. But Barrington answered with Wegner's layup, igniting a 5-0 run.

"Defensively, I really thought the kids do a good job," Tucker said. "Coach (Bill) Wandro is such a great coach and his kids execute."

Hoffman was led by Kevin Tiongson (13 points), Kyo Azumaya (9), Fischer (7) and Jimmy Fabbrini (7).

"I thought we did a great job to keep it close," Wandro said. "But they beat us in basically every category. I didn't think the ball bounced our way all night. We weren't as physical as them. I credit their coach with having his team ready to go."
