Two nights after rolling to a 32-point victory in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic, the Hersey girls basketball team found itself in an overtime thriller.
Mother McAuley rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final four minutes and tied Hersey with 19 seconds left, thanks to Megan Murphy's fourth 3-pointer of the second -round game.
But in overtime, the Huskies made sure there would be no more comebacks.
Senior Maddie Swan (14 points) hit a short turn-around bank shot moments after she won the jump ball and junior Megan Rogowski followed with a basket as the Huskies (2-1, 2-0 in tourney) never looked back while outscoring the Mighty Macs 13-4.
Rogowski, coming off a 29 -point effort against Maine West, tossed home a career-high 32 points to lead the Huskies' offense.
Senior guard Andrea Perkins, who made 6-of-6 free throws in the extra session and was 12-14 for the game, scored a career-high 17.
Senior guard Julia Fredian added 12 while Eileen Zydek had 6.
Murphy finished with 16 points for McAuley (2-2, 0-2).
Hersey jumped in front 10-0 and never trailed in the contest. The Huskies led 33-27 at the break.
"We played better most of the game," said Huskies coach Mary Fendley. "But we did not have good management at the end."
However, the overtime was a different story.
"When it counted in OT, the girls did great," Fendley said. "They kept their composure and played real well."
Hersey takes on Marian Catholic today at 2 p.m.
Maine West 65, Crane 46: Senior guard Sam Acosta scored a career-high 28 points, converting 4 3-pointers while collecting 9 rebounds and 4 assist for the Warriors (2-1, 1-1), who earned their first win in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic.
Senior Alli Ellwood added 13 points with 4 assists while classmate Megan O'Neill collected 10 points and 11 rebounds.
"We played better as a team," said Maine West Hall of Fame coach Derril Kipp, who notched career win No. 692. "We shot the ball better and we ran the offense better."
Senior Ellen Coogan and junior Katherine Kusner both had 5 rebounds and sophomore guard Amanda Hoye contributed 4 assists.
Maine West will meet Mother McAuley at 12:30 p.m. today.
Stevenson 60, Marian Catholic 46: With 5-foot-11 junior forward Michelle O'Brien tossing home 23 points (five 3-pointers), the Patriots improved to 2-0 in the Maine West Tip-Off Classic and 2-1 overall.
Stevenson and its Hall of Fame coach Tom Dineen face Crane (0-2 in tourney) at 11 a.m. today.
Wheeling 52, Proviso East 50: Wheeling, which led 30-17, improved to 4-0 at the Niles North tournament and 5-0 overall.
Senior Janelle Cannon led the Wildcats with 20 poits while classmate Bianca Szafarowicz added 17 with three3-pointers.
The Wildcats will try to defend their tourney title when they face Fenwick today at 7 p.m.
Glenbrook South 57, Schaumburg 48: Mary Snow had a game-high 19 points and senior guard Janelle Flaws had 9 as the Titans edged the host Saxons in the final round of the Schaumburg Thanksgiving tournament.
Schaumburg (1-4) was led in scoring by senior guard Taylor Kosla had a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 14 points. Junior guard Rachel Steuhm made one 3-pointer and finished with 13 points.
West Aurora 41, Conant 32: The Cougars (1-3, 1-2) were led by junior Kelly Lomas (10 points, 2 3-pointers) in the Waubonsie Valley tournament game.
Conant wraps up play in the tourney today against Naperville North at 11:30 a.m.
