St. Edward rolls over Kirkland

Despite turning the ball over 22 times, St. Edward (3-0) defeated Kirkland Hiawatha 64-26 at the 3rd Annual Westminster Christian Thanksgiving boys basketball tournament Friday night.

The Green Wave was led by 5-foot-9 senior guard Gus Domel with 12 points and junior point guard Mike Ellis with 11 points.

"I was able to see the floor real well and get the ball to our shooters." said Ellis. "We need to work better on not turning the ball over."

After the first eight minutes of play the Wave led 22-6. Senior Zach Von Ahnen (8 points) led the Green Wave in the first quarter with 6 points.

"It was a real good first half for us," said St. Edward coach Keith Chuipek. "We are getting better running the ball and our defense was much better tonight."

The Green Wave went into halftime with a 36-8 lead as its defense stymied the Hawk offense in the second quarter. Hiawatha (0-3) managed only 2 points, each coming from the free-throw line. Both free throws came with less than a minute to go in the half.

The Wave increased its lead in the third, outscoring the Hawks 12-7 to go into the final quarter with a 48-18 lead.
