Santa Shuffle 5K
The Santa Shuffle 5K Family Fun Run is at 9 a.m. Dec. 5 at the Kane County Government Center, 719 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. It benefits the Geneva Academic Foundation. There is also a youth mile, for children 12 and younger. Cost is $25 for the 5K through Friday, $30 after that; $15 for the youth run. Register at http://geneva.revtrak.net/tek9.asp. 'Black Friday bazaar
Visit "Mallternative," a holiday bazaar and vendor show, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave. Besides crafts and products, evergreen wreath and roping will be sold from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For details, visit calvary-episcopal.org.
Charity tree contest
The Geneva Giving Trees will be unveiled for voting Dec. 4 at the Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St. Seventeen local nonprofit service organizations will have decorated trees in the theme of their organization, and viewers will vote by placing money at the trees. The winning organization will receive all the money pledged to their tree. The rest will be split between the history center and the organizations. For details, visit genevahistorycenter.org.
Psychology of reading
"Reading on Earth" will be presented at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 by Donna Seaman, Booklist associate editor and book critic for Chicago Public Radio, at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. She will discuss the psychology of reading and how reading helps people connect to the living world. The program is free but registration is requested. U-46 AP scholars lauded
Nearly 160 U-46 high school students have been named AP Scholars by the College Board. Students are eligible to take the exams after completing college-level courses at their high schools. Seven U-46 students qualified for the highest distinction, the AP National Scholar Award, by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on a 5-point scale on all AP exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. They include Kelly Jaynes from Bartlett High School; and Dylan Bloomquist, Jacob Morris, Dylan Piatt, Shoaib Rashid, Claire St. George and Thomas Stopka from Elgin High School.
