Cook County roundup

Fremd didn't waste any time getting its boys basketball season off to a strong start on Monday night in Crystal Lake.

The Vikings raced out to a 17-point first-quarter lead and took care of host Prairie Ridge 83-62 in the Crystal Lake Central Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.

Zach Monaghan had a team-high 21 points and hit two 3-pointers and Chris Klimek scored 18 points for the Vikings.

"Our size kind of wore them down a little bit in the first quarter," said Fremd assistant coach Ron Cregier of his team's 24-7 lead. "Our starters did a real nice job."

It was the first time Fremd scored 80 points since an 81-65 win over Lake Park on Feb. 27, 2002 and its highest point total since it beat Weber 88-39 on Dec. 21, 1998.

Fremd also got 11 points from Nick Pflederer, 9 from Quinton Brown, 8 by Charlie Rosenberg and 7 from Jack Konopka en route to a 73-43 lead after three quarters. Prairie Ridge senior Chad Ljunggren led all scorers with 28 points and hit four 3s.

"We need to brush up on guarding our man," Cregier said. "We certainly can't let anybody get 28 on us."

Hoffman 58, Crystal Lake Central 53: Senior Colin Conway, a 6-foot-4 center, scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Hawks in their Coaches vs. Cancer tourney opener at Crystal Lake Central.

Six-7 senior Lance Vesper added 12 points for the winners, followed by classmates Kevin Tiongson (10) and Joe Valadez (9). Ben Cho and Valadez each had 3-point buckets for the Hawks.

Meadows 65, Glenbrook S. 51: Richie Kemph will be counted on to lead the way again offensively for Rolling Meadows.

The senior led in a big way in the season opener as he poured in 36 points for Meadows in Fenton's Chuck Mitchell Tournament in Bensenville. Kemph hit six 3-pointers and 5 points shy of the career-high 41 he scored last season against Wheeling.

Kyle Weiner added 11 points for the Mustangs.

St. Viator 70, Luther N. 29: Richard McLoughlin led a balanced attack with 15 points as St. Viator cruised in the opener of its annual Thanksgiving tournament.

Alan Aboona and Jack Etchingham added 12 points apiece and sophomore Chris Myjak chipped in 8 points. Viator led 36-10 at halftime and 54-25 after three.
