Officials honor vets at Schaumburg Twp. event
U.S. Rep. Melissa Bean, state Sen. John Millner and state Rep. Fred Crespo were among the elected officials who joined Schaumburg Township for a special Veterans Day dinner honoring the township's veterans last week.
"We could do this every day and it wouldn't be enough to repay you for the freedoms you've provided us," Schaumburg Township Clerk Tim Heneghan told the assembled veterans.
"There's no good way to repay you for what you've don for our nation and our freedom," Township Supervisor Mary Wroblewski agreed.
Bean talked about how no one knows when the world is going to ask them to step up and become their better selves. Veterans are people who have all already done that, she said.
"It's always an honor to join our veterans, particularly at troubling times," Bean said. "Today should be a day we honor their service to our country."
Since January, township officials have been honoring one or more veterans at their monthly meetings. All 17 were re-honored last week, in addition to six more being honored for the first time. The township also recognized the four veterans among its elected officials and staff.
The honored veterans represent all branches of the military, as well as every decade from the 1940 to the present.
