Girls swimming state meet outlook
Where: New Trier High School
Diving: Prelims begin at 9 a.m. today
Swimming: Prelims begin at 3:30 p.m. today
Finals: In both swimming and diving, finals begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Team outlook: New Trier has just about everything in its favor - terrific relays, good individual scoring opportunities plus a top-notch diver - in an effort to end Rosary's three-year state meet winning streak. Rosary has a fine team but probably needs about a perfect meet to beat the Trevians. After the top two, it's awfully tough to figure who could grab third place, which should make for an exciting day on Saturday.
Local focus
Barrington: Emily Fogle is far and away the top seed in the 100-yard breaststroke, and her goal of breaking the state record in that event seems within reach. She's been in the 1:03s virtually season and her sectional time is just over a second off the existing mark of 1:01.83 set by Stevenson's Ashley Wanland in 2007. Fogle also hopes to make the championship heat of the 200 IM, where she is seeded fourth. In addition to their relays, the Fillies have individuals Erika Elliott (50 free), Jacqueline Holdsberg (100 back), Anne Jacobsen (100 fly), Justine Kaszynski (100 fly).
Buffalo Grove: Freshman Veronika Jedryka took a huge time drop in the 500 free at sectional and is within shouting range of a top-12 finish.
Hersey: The Huskies used a full taper at sectional and produced great performances; now they'll try to duplicate them. Freshman Amanda Petro races in the 100 and 200 free, Christine Rovani has the 100 breaststroke and senior Kathryn Korff has her final effort in the 50 free before returning to the basketball court for Hersey.
Maine West: Junior Ailish O'Connell qualified in the 50 free in 24.75; the 12th-fastest seed time is 24.25.
Palatine: Junior Monica Dorszewski is a double entrant (200 free, 100 breast), and sophomore Nicole Huffman will race in the 100 back.
St. Viator: Junior Stephanie Nolan took a nice time drop at sectional and has the 28th seed.
Diving: Palatine junior Mallory Fisher and Hersey senior Kate Reszotko have earned repeat state appearances. Joining them as at-large qualifiers are Barrington senior Anna Etherington and Maine West junior Jennifer Rey.
