Streamwood drops Dundee-Crown in opener
With Melissa Oehlerking and Alex Kowalewski drilling shots from the outside along with Emma Schmidt and Michele Tomczak's dominance in the paint and on the boards, Streamwood's girls basketball team had too much balance and power for Dundee-Crown to contend with Wednesday night.
The Sabre foursome combined for 60 points, 43 rebounds and 8 assists as Streamwood opened the 2009-2010 campaign with a convincing 62-44 win over Dundee-Crown in an opening round game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament.
"We have some good size and should have a good inside game this season," said Streamwood coach George Rosner. "We did a good job of taking the ball to the basket and getting easy shots. We also hit some outside shots and had a good balanced attack. It was a good first game, but we can play better."
Schmidt led the Sabres with 21 points, 12 in the fourth quarter along with 12 rebounds. Tomczak added 18, 13 in the first half with 17 rebounds. Oehlerking scored 11 points with 12 rebounds and 6 assists while Kowalewski scored 10 points with two 3-pointers, 2 rebounds and 2 assists.
Nursing a slim 34-29 halftime lead, Streamwood won the game during the first 3 minutes of the second half. Forcing D-C (0-2) into 3 turnovers, the Sabres scored the first 11 points of the third quarter. With Schmidt and Tomczak scoring 4 points each, the Sabres opened up a 45-29 advantage.
"We addressed defense at halftime," said Rosner. "We gave them way too many easy shots in the first half. But we came out with more intensity in the second half and did a better job of cutting off the passing lanes."
Streamwood's biggest lead was at 58-38 after a putback by Schmidt with 2:22 left in the game.
Ali Sanders paced the Chargers with 14 points while Megan Fasenella scored 12.
"We played much better than we did (Tuesday) night against Prairie Ridge," Dundee-Crown coach Michelle Russell. "We played a very good first half, but we were impatient in the second half and had way too many unforced turnovers. They had too much height for us. But I like the way the girls fought and we gave a good effort."
Jacobs 58, Hononegah 38: Junior Melanie Schwerdtmann scored a game-high 19 points and Hailey Cnota added 10 as Jacobs (2-0) rolled to a 20-point win at the Dundee-Crown tournament. Maria Tamburrino added 10 points for the Golden Eagles, who led 22-15 at halftime.
Lena-Winslow 53, Larkin 16: The Royals were shut out in the fourth quarter of this season-opening loss at the Oregon tournament.
