What's happening this week in U-46 schools

Here some of what's in the news for the week of Nov. 2-7 at Elgin Area Unit District 46 schools. Seniors 62 and older living in the district may attend U-46 plays and concerts for free if they pick up a platinum card from Paula in the Communications office. Board meeting

• On Monday, the U-46 board of education meets at 7 p.m. in Room 140 at the Educational Services Center, 355 E. Chicago St., Elgin. The public is welcome to attend and provide citizen comments to the school board at the open meetings. For information, visit the School Board & Community link at u-46.org.

Health clinics

• Health clinics, sponsored by U-46 and the Greater Elgin Family Care Center, will be held for children birth to age 18. The schedule: 3 to 6 p.m. Monday at Lowrie Elementary School, 264 Oak St., Elgin; 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Ontarioville Elementary School, 2100 Elm St., Hanover Park; 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sheridan Elementary School, 510 Franklin Blvd., Elgin; and 3:45-6 p.m. Thursday at Huff Elementary School, 801 Hastings St., Elgin. Call (847) 608-1344 for appointments. Services provided include baby exams, school and sport physicals, shots, care for minor illnesses, lead and diabetic screening and more.

Elgin High

• Elgin High School's "E" Boosters to host the 2009 "E" Booster Bonanza Fall Festival from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Moretti's, 1175 W. Lake St., Bartlett. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. It features pizza from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., a cash bar, cake and coffee, silent and live auctions, raffles and fun. Cost is $23 per person. You must be 21 or older. Larkin High

• On Thursday to Saturday, the fall play "The Miracle Worker" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Larkin High School auditorium, 1475 Larkin Ave., Elgin. Tickets are $6.

South Elgin High

• The play, "James and the Giant Peach" will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, as well as a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday, at South Elgin High School, 760 E. Main St. It continues at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 and 11 a.m. Nov. 14. Admission is $8, or $6 for students and senior citizens.

Ellis

• On Saturday, Ellis Middle School, 225 S. Liberty St., Elgin, will host a Parent University Workshop for Hispanic parents from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop will provide educational, health, and social resource information.

• On Saturday, from 12:30-4:30 p.m., the school will hold its first garage sale. There will also be baked goods available for purchase. All proceeds will go to funding resources and events for Ellis students.

Kenyon Woods

• On Wednesday, Family Fun Night will be held from 6-8 p.m. at Kenyon Woods Middle School, 1515 Raymond St., South Elgin. Games and inflatables will be available for both young children and adults to enjoy. The PTO will be selling hot dogs, chips and drinks. $5 or $10 per family.

• On Friday, students and staff will challenge each other in a volleyball game after school. Admission is $2.

Centennial

• On Tuesday, a parent/guardian pizza lunch with the principal to discuss school improvement initiatives will be held at noon at Centennial Elementary School.

• On Tuesday, "Meet with the Principal" will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the all-purpose room. The School Improvement Plan, RTI and the Reading Curriculum will be discussed with parents and guardians.

• On Wednesday and Thursday, the play "Annie" will be presented at 7 p.m. in the school gym, 234 E. Stearns Road, Bartlett. Tickets are $1 per child and $2 per adult.

Illinois Park

• On Wednesday, Parents as Teachers will host a drop-in play group for families with children birth to age 5 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Illinois Park Early Learning Center, 1350 Wing St., Elgin.

Laurel Hill

• Starting Monday to Nov. 18, Laurel Hill Elementary staff and students will hold a food drive to support the Lions Club. The community also is invited to donate.

• On Thursday, ELL parenting classes will be held from 9:45 to 11 a.m. in the new conference room. The class is sponsored by Hanover Township. Parents are given information and strategies to help their children with school work.

Liberty

• On Monday, two identical assemblies titled, "Power of One" will be held at 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. in the Liberty Elementary gym, 121 Naperville Ave., Bartlett. The PTO-sponsored assembly is regarding bullying.

• On Thursday, second-graders will take a field trip to South Elgin High to watch the play, "James and the Giant Peach."

Lowrie

• On Monday, Parents as Teachers will host a drop-in play group for families with children birth to age 5 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Lowrie Elementary School, 264 Oak St., Elgin.

McKinley

• On Thursday, Parents as Teachers will host a drop-in play group for families with children birth to age 5 from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at McKinley Elementary School, 258 Lovell St., Elgin.

Spring Trail

• On Monday through Thursday, the Book Fair will take place during school hours at Spring Trail Elementary School, 1384 Spring Valley Drive, Carol Stream. On Tuesday and Wednesday, there will also be evening hours from 4-7 p.m.

Woodland Heights

• On Thursday, Parents as Teachers will host a drop-in play group for families with children birth to age 5 from 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. at Woodland Heights Early Learning Center, 900 S. Park Blvd., Streamwood.
