Cary-Grove completes another 9-0 run

Cary-Grove senior Eric Chandler was getting a little tired during warmups.

After 2 days of nonstop rain, the Dundee-Crown Bowl looked more like a swamp and Chandler was using extra energy to simply pick his feet up from the mess.

But as soon as the live action started, Chandler, an avid Minnesota Vikings' fans, looked like Adrian Peterson as he rushed for 157 yards and 4 touchdowns on 6 carries.

"The line did an outstanding job," Chandler said. "They came out like they do every week. Even the backs ... Stephen Hapanovich had some good blocks."

Cary-Grove also came out like it does every week with a 57-12 victory over Dundee-Crown. The win locks up the sixth-straight undefeated conference title (5-0) and its fifth perfect 9-0 regular in the past 6 seasons. Dundee-Crown finishes its season 1-8 overall and 0-5 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division.

Cary-Grove left little doubt early on. The Trojans scored 41 unanswered first-quarter points.

Chandler rushed for a 56-yard score of the opening play of the game. After the Trojans held the Chargers on their next possession, Chandler again scored on the opening play, this time a 50-yard rush.

He would later add scoring runs of 9 and 6 yards, putting Cary-Grove ahead 41-0 with 3:10 to go in the opening period. When he wasn't blocking, Hapanovich was scoring on runs of 6 and 4 yards in the opening quarter. Senior Alex Schuh scored the final 2 Trojans touchdowns on runs of 6 and 16 yards.

"Our overall play was very good," Trojans' coach Bruce Kay said. "We executed. The blocking upfront was extremely good. (Chandler) may have had to make one cut once."

Dundee-Crown was able to avoid the shutout with a couple of touchdown passes from Tanner Kotlan. The junior quarterback hooked up with Geoff Clifford on a 25-yard score with 5 seconds left in the first half to cut the Trojans' lead to 49-6. Later, he found Danny Sharp with 9:17 left in the game on a 8-yard pass.

"It was a positive way to end the season," Chargers' coach Mike Davis said of scoring late in the game.
