Benet takes ESCC title; Viator places second
Jerry Olt's winning finish in 15:54 at Maryville Academy on Saturday helped Benet Academy earn the East Suburban Catholic Conference boys cross country title.
The Redwings finished at 49 points, 1 better than runner-up St. Viator. Marian Catholic was third at 83 and Carmel placed fourth at 100.
The finish for St. Viator was its best since 2002. The Lions packed their five scorers consecutively in places 8 through 12; Mike Cervantes led the group at 16:59 and was followed by Nick Fiore, Eric Loy, Tim Brinkmann and Peter Cleary. St. Viator was the only team to have all five runners earn all-conference honors for finishing in the top 15.
"I was really proud of the way we ran," said St. Viator coach Wayne Edelman. "The one thing we really wanted to do was to run together, and we certainly did that.
"Sure, it's a little bit heartbreaking (to finish second by 1 point), but still, this was a very enouraging showing for us. Now we just want to maintain momentum until the regional."
Carmel's got an individual runner-up finish from K.J. Matuszak in 16:15 and a 14th-place effort from Carl Horcher.
