Panel awaits answers on school closing
Members of the Cary Elementary District 26 Finance Committee said this week they need more data before they will accept the administration's recommendation to close Maplewood Elementary School. This week, Superintendent Brian Coleman recommended closing the school at the end of this year to help erase a deficit that is expected to grow to $5 million at the end of next year. "We came up with a list of things we wanted the administration to investigate," Finance Committee Chairman Chris Jenner said. "We need more detail to feel more comfortable with the recommendation." Coleman is expected to return to the committee with answers later this month.
Library picks new chief
The board of the Huntley Area Public Library appointed a new director on Tuesday. The director will replace Virginia Maravilla, who has served as library director since the current library opened in 1999. Earlier this year, Maravilla announced she plans to retire at the end of November. But a library spokesman said Maravilla's end date is flexible as the library transitions to new leadership. The library did not release the name of the new director or details on the individual's contract because a deal has not been finalized. The position was advertised at a salary range of $80,000 to $90,000. The library board chose the new director out of four finalists the board interviewed.
