• The Chicago Bible Society named Roger W. Paulsberg, president and chief executive officer, Lutheran Life Communities, and Fr. Michael Boland, president and chief executive officer, Catholic Charities of Chicago, recipients of its 2009 Gutenberg Award, which honors meaningful contributions to the cause of the Bible.

Paulsberg, who has worked in administrative positions in the senior health care field since 1980, became administrator of the Lutheran Home, Arlington Heights, in 1989. In 1991, he was named president and chief executive officer of Lutheran Home & Services.

• John Hersey High School seniors Megan Anderluh of Arlington Heights and Martin Diaz of Mount Prospect and Maine East High School senior Kristin Beierwaltes have joined exclusive company as three of the 28 Illinois high school students to receive an Achievement Award in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English.

• Nancy Zomaya of Des Plaines received a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. Zomaya previously earned a bachelor's degree from Lake Forest College, Lake Forest.

• Sarah Tesch, a senior biochemistry major at Valparaiso University, conducted research with the University's chemistry department this past summer. She worked in collaboration with the United States Department of Energy in a study of microbes and their ability to reduce contamination by certain metals. Tesch is the daughter of Mark and Danette Tesch of Schaumburg.

• Rose Sloan of Schaumburg, received a $2,500 four-year scholarship award from The Chicago Lighthouse to help her pursue a degree in social policy at Northwestern University. Sloan was one of 30 visually impaired students from across the U.S. who were awarded Lighthouse scholarships for their outstanding academic achievements as well as their individual stories of courage and determination.

Legally blind from congenital glaucoma, Sloan has been able to excel in and out of the classroom with the help of low vision aiding technology. She hopes to continue utilizing that technology while pursuing her degree.
