Lake Zurich wins own tourney
Lake Zurich's girls volleyball team needed to win all five of its matches in its own Bear Battle tournament Saturday to hit the 20-win mark.
Done.
The Bears beat Fenwick 25-11, 25-12 for the championship, as Brittany Murawski slammed 10 kills. Audrey Bauer and Jenn Grunden added six and five, respectively. Grunden also delivered 3 aces, while Alexis Hartman dished out 7 assists.
Lake Zurich (20-6) downed Fenwick earlier, too, capturing a 25-22, 25-12 decision. The Bears' other wins were against Waukegan (25-20, 25-23), Rolling Meadows (25-15, 25-11) and Lake Zurich's JV (25-10, 25-7).
Murawski had 12 kills against Waukegan.
Meanwhile, Carmel Catholic went 3-2 on the day, knocking off Warren 25-15, 25-23 for fifth place.
The Corsairs' leaders included Megan Mowery (23 kills, 41 assists, 8 aces); Hannah Turner (21 kills); Erin Paterkiewicz (16 kills, 7 blocks); and C.C. Federer (39 assists).
Grayslake North invite: Mundelein advanced to the championship match, where the Mustangs lost a heartbreaker to McHenry 25-22, 21-25, 25-23.
Mundelein (19-8, 3-2, both losses to McHenry) played without Michelle Parssinen. The Mustangs were led by Megan Barron (35 kills), Brittany Jones (24 kills, 39 digs), Kelsey Sullivan (94 assists, 16 aces); Alysa Fritz (58 digs); and Brittany Busscher (18 kills, 34 digs).
